Slime and craft kits as a party activity

A craft activity fills the gap between arrival and food better than anything else. What works at a table with twelve children, and what makes a mess nobody signed up for.

The hardest part of a children’s party is the first forty minutes, when guests have arrived at different times and nothing has started. An activity that can be picked up and put down covers that gap better than a structured game, because children join it as they arrive rather than waiting for everyone.

Craft and slime kits work well for this, with some caveats worth knowing before the table is set out.

Choose something with no wrong outcome

The activity has to work for a child who arrives twenty minutes late and for one who loses interest after five. Anything with a single correct result produces disappointment on both counts.

Twenty to thirty minutes is the realistic attention span for most groups. Plan the activity to be finishable in that time rather than to fill an hour.

It doubles as the party bag

A made thing going home is worth more to a child than a bought thing, and it removes an item from the favour budget. A tub of slime that has been played with for half an hour is already theirs.

Have a second activity ready

Some groups finish in ten minutes and some are still going at forty, and a host who has planned exactly one activity is exposed to whichever happens. A second, simpler option held in reserve – stickers, a colouring sheet, bubbles outdoors – costs almost nothing and removes the risk entirely.

Label the box with what is in it and put it with the party supplies rather than with the toys. It becomes the reserve activity for the next party, which is the cheapest planning you will ever do.
