Piece count is the number printed on the box and guest count is the number you need. A 350-piece set sounds generous until you divide it: fifty people, seven pieces each, which is two plates, a cup and four items of cutlery. That covers a meal with no spares and no second cup.
Here are the ratios that actually hold, taken from what people come back for.
Cups are the first thing to run out
People put a cup down, lose track of it and take another. Over an evening the realistic figure is two and a half to three cups per guest, and at a party with children it is higher still.
This is the single most common shortfall. If you buy one thing beyond the set, buy more cups, and it is worth writing names on them at a smaller gathering purely to slow the rate down.
Plates: two per guest for a meal, one for finger food
A seated meal with a dessert needs two plates each. A standing buffet, where people graze and return, runs closer to one and a half because plates get reused within the same visit but not across the evening.
Anything sticky, saucy or hot pushes the figure up, because a plate that has held something messy does not get reused.
Forks outnumber knives roughly two to one
Most party food is eaten with a fork alone. Sets supply equal quantities of each, which means you run out of forks with a drawer full of knives, every time.
Buying a bulk pack of forks alongside a matched set is the cheapest way to fix this and it is why we stock them separately. Spoons matter only if there is dessert or ice.
Napkins: three per guest, minimum
Napkins are consumed at a rate that surprises people, particularly with children present. Three each is the working minimum and four is more comfortable.
They are also the cheapest item on the list by a wide margin, so over-buying costs almost nothing and running out is genuinely disruptive.
The three points where supplies fail
The first is about ninety minutes in, when the initial cups are exhausted. The second is when food is served, if plates were set out early and used for snacks. The third is at dessert, when nobody has a clean fork left.
Holding a sealed reserve pack back rather than putting everything out at the start solves all three. Set out two thirds and keep the rest in the kitchen.
Buy for more people than you invited
Attendance at an informal party is unpredictable in one direction: people bring somebody. Ten per cent over the invited number is a sensible margin and twenty per cent for anything with children.
Unopened packs can go back within thirty days of delivery, so buying the larger set and returning it sealed is a legitimate strategy if the numbers are genuinely uncertain.

Standard delivery is $5.99; spend $49 and we cover it. Orders are packed in one to three business days and travel for five to ten, so plan on six to thirteen business days between placing an order and opening the box. Everything ships from New York, NY, to United States addresses.
