A party bag has one job: to give a child something to hold on the way out so that leaving does not feel like an ending. Almost everything beyond that is optional, and a great deal of what goes into party bags is discarded before the car reaches home.
Three or four items is plenty. What matters is which three or four.
One thing that lasts, two that do not
The reliable composition is a single item with some durability – a toy, a puzzle, something to make – plus two smaller consumables. The durable item is the one remembered; the consumables are the ones opened in the car.
Loading a bag with six small novelties produces a bag that is heavy, expensive and forgettable. One good thing beats five weak ones and usually costs the same.
What survives the journey home
Anything with a single moving part and no small components: coil springs, sticky hands, bubble wands, stretchy toys. They are used immediately, they survive being sat on, and they do not have pieces to lose.
What does not survive: anything with more than three parts, anything that needs assembly, and anything that needs a flat surface. Those go into a drawer and then a bin.
Ages and the small-parts line
Under three, nothing with small components, full stop. Between three and six, single-piece items work best because the child can use them without help.
From about seven upward, things that do something – slime, a puzzle, anything with a small challenge in it – hold attention for considerably longer than a novelty toy does.
What parents quietly resent
Anything noisy, anything that stains, and anything with loose glitter. All three end up being managed by an adult who did not choose them, and they are the reason party bags have a slightly poor reputation.
Slime sits on the edge of this list. Non-sticky formulations in a sealed tub are fine; anything that will meet a sofa is not, and the difference is worth checking on the packaging rather than assuming.
The bag itself
A reusable non-woven bag costs a little more than paper and is used afterwards, which removes the single biggest complaint about party bags. It also survives being carried by a five-year-old, which paper reliably does not.
Plain colours are more useful than printed themes because the bag continues to have a life. This is a small thing that makes a measurable difference to how the bag is received.
Buying in the right quantities
Favours are sold in multipacks because filling bags from single items is slow and expensive. Work out the number of children, add two, and buy the pack size above it.
Leftovers keep indefinitely and cover the next party, which is why the pack sizes are what they are. Glow sticks in particular store for years unopened.
